Q. What is
Government Camp?
A. The
Village at Government Camp (3700' elevation) was formally a camp on the old Barlow Road, A
section of the Oregon Trail, between St. Louis and Portland. The Village was named in 1849
when U.S. Calvary troops when forced in the winter to abandon wagons and supplies here.
Today the Village has a year round population of about 125, including cats and dogs. Today
the Village host thousands of visitors every year to enjoy this idyllic location on Mt.
Hood as a year round recreational playground.
Q. Are there Shuttle Services on the mountain?
A. There are no shuttle services here on the
mountain to and from the ski areas. However, 2 firms do provide (by prior reservation)
shuttle service between the Portland Airport (PDX) and the Mt. Hood Inn as well to the ski
areas.

Q. Should I bring tire chains?
A. Always carry traction devices during the winter months.
Q. Can I put tire chains on my rental car?
A. Airport car rental agencies do not provide or allow tire chains on
rental cars. Try to reserve a 4 wheel drive with all-weather tires.
Q. Is there a gas station or store on the mountain?
A. There is only one gas station and two small convenience store in
Government Camp. Open 7am to 9pm. There is no mechanic.
